Have you applied for a Home Care Package? Once you get to the top of the waitlist and are assigned your package you will receive a letter from My Aged Care. We know, you receive a lot of letters from My Aged Care. It can be hard to know which letters are important and for what, however the My Aged Care Referral Code is definitely something worth keeping your eyes peeled for.

It’s important to note that when you are assigned a Home Care Package, you have 56 days to enter into an agreement with a Home Care Package Provider before your package is withdrawn.

That’s why it’s a good job to understand what a My Aged Care Referral Code is, what it looks like, when you’ll recieve it, and what to do when you do!

That way when you recieve your Home Care Package funding you will be able to commence with a Provider and get the care services you need started as soon as possible.

Your Referral Code is a 1- number followed by eight or so other numbers.

If you get a letter with multiple different codes, they could be CHSP Referral Codes instead. This means that you will receive interim funding while you are waiting to be assigned your Home Care Package. For more on the difference between HCP and CHSP click here.

What is a Home Care Package Provider?

When you receive your Home Care Package you will need to select a Home Care Package to support you. There are lots of different Home Care Package providers available and the decision you make is personal and could depend on some of the following factors:

  1. Do you want to self-manage, part-manage or have full-management support with your Home Care Package?
  2. Do you want a Provider that has their own support working staff, or brokers their services and let’s you choose who you want to deliver your care and services?
  3. Do you want a Provider that is local to you?
  4. Do you want a Care Manager who will visit you?
  5. Do you want to go with a Provider who already supports some of your family or friends (if they have a Home Care Package).
  6. What fees would you like to pay a Provider to manage your Home Care Package?

These are just a few examples of questions you might consider when selecting your Home Care Package Provider.

Before you’ve recieved your letter with your My Aged Care Referral Code, you might like to do some research about the Providers you have available to you. That way once you get your My Aged Care Referral Code you will be ready to select your Provider, give them the code and get your care and support services started.

Why does my Provider need my My Aged Care Referral Code?

My Aged Care may tell you not to give your Referral Code to Providers until you have made your decision. However, this isn’t always the correct advice. A Provider will often need to be given your Referral Code in order to access your care documents. This will help them assess if they are the right Provider for you and complete your sign up efficiently.

What My Aged Care means to say is that your Referral Code shouldn’t be accepted by a Provider until you are sure they are the right Provider for you. Some Providers will do this. So it’s important to clarify with them that you don’t want them to accept your My Aged Care Referral Code until you have completed your sign up with them.

What happens when a Provider accepts my Referral Code?

When a Provider accepts your Referral Code it triggers your Home Care Package funding. This is why, at Let’s Get Care – we will ask you if you are happy for us to do this before we accept it. We want to ensure that you are signing up with us before we do this.

How about if I’m Switching Home Care Package Providers?

Before you make the decision to switch providers you should check your Home Care Agreement with your current Provider. When doing this look for the conditions, such as notice periods.

Once you have found a new provider you will need to contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to re-activate your Referral Code. You need this new Referral Code to give your new Provider before you can start receiving their services.

If My Aged Care tells you they are unable to reactivate your code this is wrong. While a CHSP code cannot be reactivated a HCP code can. When you switch, you will also need to notify your current Provider that you will be switching the Provider.

You can discuss your plan with them and ask them about the date your care and services will end.Once you have agreed upon this date, you should notify your new Provider. This will ensure there is a seamless transition and you don’t miss out on any funding.
