6 tricks to stay hydrated as an older person.

We all know that hydration is extremely important for our overall health, but did you know that older adults are at risk of worse dehydration? Remembering to stay hydrated as an older person can be more difficult.

When we get older our sense of thirst diminishes, so even if our body is needing water, we might not realise. Also, as we age the body’s mechanisms which are designed to protect us from dehydration, don’t work as well.

Here’s some tips to make sure you’re always hydrated.


1. 8 cups of water a day!

The ‘eight glasses of water a day’ rule can seem overwhelming but is a pretty consistent recommendation for keeping hydrated.

There are practical ways to achieve this. Try having a cup or two with every meal, and when you brush your teeth. Water really is the most important and simple way to stay hydrated. So even just increasing your water intake by a glass or two each day could make a significant difference to your overall health and wellbeing.


2. Would you like a cuppa?

While caffeine can be a diuretic, herbal teas like chamomile, ginger and peppermint often contain no caffeine at all. In the colder months it can be even harder to remember to drink, so tea could be a good idea. If English Breakfast is more your cup of tea, don’t fret because as long as you have it in moderation and keep up your water in-take you’ll be fine. )

3. Variety is the spice of Life!

If you’re sick of drinking water, (even though it’s the most ideal source of hydration)… switch it up with some milk or juice.

Everything in moderation though, particularly with juice which can be very high in sugar.

4. Get fruity.

There are a lot of fruits that are actually extremely hydrating. Some examples and their water content are:

  • Watermelon = 92%
  • Strawberries = 91%
  • Cantaloupe = 90%
  • Peaches = 89%
  • Oranges = 88%

Fruits are a great way of not even realising that you’re hydrating yourself. If you don’t eat a lot of fruit already, try and incorporate some more into your daily diet. Not only does it have hydrating benefits, it can also help with other aspects of your health too.

5. Sweet and SAVOURY.

If you’re more of a savoury fan why not try drinking some hot soup?

Whether it’s a homemade minestrone or a store-bought chicken noodle soup, anything containing water will provide you with a sneaky way to stay hydrated. Try a new soup recipe and watch as your meals not only fill you up, but hydrate you too!

6. Make your water fancy.

Try adding extra things to your water to jazz it up a little. Whether it be cucumber, strawberries or slices of lemon, get creative and make hydration fun.

Dehydration is very common and can become a serious issue as we get older. So, the best thing to do is try and prevent it from happening, to avoid problems in the future.
