The Home Care Package (HCP) programme has been instrumental in keeping older Australian’s living at home longer. With many people wanting to stay living at home as long as possible, this has been an increasingly popular option. And that’s why it’s so important to get an early Home Care Package assessment.
The increase in demand has meant there are often long wait times between your approval for a Package and actually receiving the funding. So what can you do to get your Home Care Package assessment done early?
Here’s why you should an early Home Care Package assessment.
There’s lots of reasons to get your Home Care Package assessment done. The Home Care Package provides you with funding to continue living safely and happily at home. We’ve come up with a few points to get you started!
1. It can take up to 2 years for your funding to come through.
One of the main concerns in the royal commission into aged care was the wait times for Home Care Packages. We speak to people everyday who have had to wait up to 18 months to get their funding.
There have even sadly been cases where by the time an individual gets there funding it is too late.
This is why it’s so important to get assessed early with the knowledge that you will have to likely wait a long time before you receive your funding.
2. Your care needs might increase while you are waiting.
You never know what the future holds. Often by the time you receive your funding your care needs will have changed.
If your situation changes and your care needs become more complex you are able to notify My Aged Care and be reassessed.
For those who are assessed early this will be easier as they will already have your name and initial care needs recorded.
As they say it is better to be safe than sorry.
3. You could be eligible for CHSP funding.
While you are waiting for your Home Care Package you might receive some interim funding to help in the meantime.
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) provides a range of entry-level aged care services. These services support older people who need assistance to live independently at home and in their community.
The CHSP funds a large variety of organisations (called service providers) across Australia to deliver the care and services to you at a subsidised rate.
While a CHSP isn’t a longterm solution to keeping you living at home, it could really help in the interim.
4. If you don’t get the Package someone else will.
We often speak to people who are of the ‘someone needs it more than me’ mentality.
While this is a great way to be, if you want to remain living at home you need to plan for the future.
It’s a good idea to get assessed if you qualify for funding and want to continue living at home for as long as possible.
Even if you just need some help with the cleaning, gardening or someone to take you down to the shops twice a week it’s important to be proactive.
Remember, while maintaining your independence is great, it’s okay to ask for help.
